The software uses the Temperature Star Rating from the Heating Emitter guide to indicate how efficient the proposed system is likely to be. More efficient systems are given a higher number of stars. The maximum is 6 stars. More stars are given when lower heat emitter temperatures are used because the heat pump is able to operate more efficiently.

Before deciding the size of heat pump you need to establish if the existing heating system is capable of operating at a suitably low-temperature to achieve a reasonable coefficient of performance from the heat pump. This is the purpose of the star rating.

Heat Emitters

For new project retrofitted to existing buildings you need to establish the likely performance of the existing heating system. Select a target rating of 3 stars before entering the room data the software will calculate to see if the existing system will meet this requirement. if the project meets the requirement you will have a heat pump working at 500C with a coefficient of performance of approximately 2.7. You will then be able to consider additional improvements to the system to achieve a better result.
